We obey the doctor when we are told to take medication for our alignment. We obey the law to get a driver’s license or register our dog. We obey the contracts we sign to have access to the Internet or television provider. So why do we struggle with obeying God’s Word, God’s calling on our life?
Every time we struggle we need to cry out “Give me Your strength”.
Consider Sampson and listening to God’s calling on us and obeying that calling. Parallels. “Give me Your strength.” What is it with our obedience? You see throughout the Old Testament…
God using Moses to share with us to encourage the people to obey His covenant (Exodus 19:5) and when he, Moses, shared the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20). In Leviticus “…you must obey my regulations… (18:4, 5, 26, 30)”… you must obey my instructions…” (18:30).
Joshua Chapter 1 carries on the encouragement to obey (Joshua 1:7). Solomon sought from God, and got the instruction to “…follow me and obey my decrees and my commands…” (1 Kings 3:14).
Ok, you get the picture, but lets look at the New Testament.
Matthew 7:26 “…But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand…”. OK, hope that got your attention.
Luke 1:6 “Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous in God’s eyes, careful to obey all of the Lord’s commandments and regulations.” Do you know who they are?
Luke 8:19-21 “Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they couldn’t get to him because of the crowd. Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, and they want to see you.” Jesus replied, “My mother and my brothers are all those who hear God’s word and obey it.” Are you a brother or sister of Jesus?
Proverbs 7:2-3 “Obey my (God’s) commands and live! Guard my (God’s) instructions as you guard your own eyes. Tie them on your fingers (Post-It Note on the refrigerator, bathroom mirror, or door) as a reminder. Write them deep (down) within your heart (and your mind). The deeper they are the quicker they come out of your mouth.
Find what it takes for YOU to remember God’s commands and instructions, then implement them so that YOU can do a better job at obeying HIM.
BTW… I struggle with this… just so you know… but I won’t quit trying…
